Spectroscopic characterization of fluorinated aldehydes in gas phase

The remote sensing techniques require precise knowledge of the spectral parameters (line positions, intensities) for an accurate retrieval of the atmospheric profiles. The goal of this research training is to provide the spectral parameters in the terahertz domain on one of the fluorinated aldehydes. These compounds are produced as secondary pollutants in the atmospheric oxidation of partially fluorinated alcohols, and their estimated lifetimes with respect to photolysis may vary from several days up to several weeks. Fluorinated alcohols have been suggested as a replacement for hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) having high global warming potential. The research training has three main objectives: (i) to measure in the terahertz domain the rotational spectrum of a fluorinated aldehyde that contains a trifluoromethyl group -CF3; (ii) to analyze the obtained spectrum using a model that accounts for hindered internal rotation of -CF3 group and (iii) to provide a contribution to a spectroscopic database with the list of absorption line frequencies and intensities. Depending on student’s preferences the emphases may be placed on experimental part - spectral measurements, high-resolution terahertz technique, or on theoretical part - spectral analysis, spectral modeling, molecular database.
