A part of a project funded by the French Agency for the Research ( https://lpca.univ-littoral.fr/recherche/programmes/anr-heroes/ ), we propose an internship focussed on the conception of a new high resolution spectrometer to be subsequently installed on the AILES beam line of the synchrotron SOLEIL. The AILES beamline extracts synchrotron radiation emitted by various operating modes of the SOLEIL machine in a broad spectral range covering the THz and far-IR regions. The AILES beamline aims to characterize the spectral properties of various materials and molecular species using the synchrotron radiation. The AILES beamline, like other synchrotron-based far-IR spectroscopy stations, makes use of Fourier transform interferometry to acquire high resolution absorption spectra.Due to the limited optical delay line obtained using mechanical displacement of the moving mirror, such technique has an inherent limit of the spectral resolution that can be achieved. One objective of this project is to improve by more than one order of magnitude the available spectral resolution. We propose to implement a heterodyne detection by using a new kind of molecular laser patented by a partner of this study. This new laser source should open news perspectives mainly in the context of high resolution spectroscopy. The access to synchrotron facilities are relatively limited. It is therefore critical to implement a first prototype at the LPCA before transferring towards the synchrotron. The objective of this internship is to contribute to the fabrication of a first prototype and then to use it in the context of high resolution spectroscopy. One of the tasks will be to accurately measure the emission frequencies of various molecular lines. The LPCA has developed a THz synthesiser using latest development in optical frequency metrology to perform such characterizations. This experimental training requires good team working as well as organization skills to interact with the different partners of this project. It may be possible to perform some experiments at the Soleil synchrotron. In the case of successful completion of this internship extension to a PhD could be proposed.
