Magnesium and its alloys, with their unique properties such as high strength/density ratio, good castability and machinability have found many applications in the automotive and aerospace industries. One of the reasons that restrict their wide spread applicability is their poor corrosion resistance, since Mg is readily oxidized in the presence of oxygen and humidity. The objective of this project is to synthesize Mg-SiO2 composites using powder metallurgy technique and to study its sintering kinetics and microstructure in detail. As the composites of Magnesium offer excellent mechanical properties along with the light weight that form an excellent combinations for the applications in automotive and aerospace industries. The microstructure and mechanical properties will be investigated by a combination of techniques such as SEM, EDS and TEM.
